FIBA, the world governing body for basketball, is an independent association formed by 213 National Federations of basketball throughout the world. It is recognised as the sole competent authority in basketball by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Overall, Canada’s National Teams had great success internationally in 2009, with both the Cadet Men’s and Women’s Team qualifying for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championships. At the highest level, Canada’s Senior Men’s and Women’s Teams both qualified for the 2010 FIBA World Championships. Joining dominant countries like Argentina, Australia, China, Spain and the USA, Canada is one of only six FIBA nations to achieve this distinction.
Also in 2010, Canada's Junior Men's and Women's Teams will be competing at the
FIBA Americas U18 Championship hoping to earn a berth to the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championships.
