NORTHEASTERN DOWNS QUEENS TO BEGIN NCAA-CIS EXHIBITION MARATHON

Last Updated: September 02, 2008

KINGSTON, Ont. – The exhibition basketball schedule between Canadian Intercollegiate Sports (CIS) and the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association got under way Monday night as the Northeastern University (Boston) Huskies knocked off the Queen’s University Gold Gaels 69-59.

Junior Matt Janning scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies, who play in the NCAA Division I Colonial Athletic Association. Canadian Ben Felix from Mill Bay on Vancouver Island, who is in his freshman year with the Huskies, played nine minutes tallying four points.

The Gaels' Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont., was the game’s top scorer, posting 20 points and five rebounds.

The Gaels were the first squad to meet an NCAA opponent this season with other CIS basketball programs slated to play 59 games over the next 10 days.

The Gaels' undoing was the third quarter when they surrendered 23 points while scoring only 17. Leger led a fourth-quarter surge which ultimately fell short.

This was the first of four games against NCAA opponents for Queen’s while Northeastern is on a seven-game Canadian trip.
