MCMASTER INDUCTS CANADA BASKETBALL OFFICIAL AND ATHLETE

Last Updated: October 28, 2008

HAMILTON - Hamilton businessman Ron Foxcroft and McMaster University basketball star Titus Channer were inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday as part of McMaster's Homecoming Weekend celebrations.

Ron Foxcroft: Foxcroft, a member of the board of directors for Canada Basketball, was enshrined in the builders category for his role as chair of the campaign that raised $23 million for Mac's sports complex and stadium.

"Ron contributed to our football and basketball programs over the years way before the concept of the new facilities was even being discussed," said Mac director of athletics and recreation Therese Quigley.

"He's been an extremely generous supporter...and involved in pretty much every aspect of fundraising for football and basketball that we've done."

Foxcroft's basketball officiating career began in McMaster's Burridge gym, and went on to include seven Canadian university championships. He is the only Canadian to serve as a referee in the NCAA with 35 years service to the international and U.S. college game.

A highlight of Foxcroft's officiating career was being assigned as a referee for the 1976 Olympic gold medal basketball game between Russia and the United States.

He also played an integral role in the advancement of the sport with his invention of the pealess Fox 40 whistle that revolutionized the basketball game around the world. For his achivements both on and off the court, Foxcroft was inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999, both as an official and as a builder.

Titus Channer: A Hamilton high school basketball standout, Channer was one of the top basketball athletes ever to play at McMaster University. Titus earned multiple awards including: CIAU All-Canadian team (2nd team in 95 and '96, 1st team in 97 and 98); CIAU Rookie of the Year in 1994; OUA West Division Most Valuable Player ('97 and '98); 1998 Mike Moser Award winner for the CIAU Men's Basketball Player of the Year and the Howard Mackie Award winner for the CIAU Male Athlete of the Year.

Titus was a member of Canada Basketball's senior men's national team that participated in the 2002 FIBA World Championships in Indianapolis.

Marauders head coach Joe Raso once stated, "Titus has been the foundation of our program. His decision to play his basketball at McMaster and his ability to improve his game to the national level speaks highly of CIAU basketball. He has set a new standard for all future Marauders."
