SUBWAY CHAIN SERVES UP SPONSORSHIP FOR ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY SPORT

Last Updated: December 04, 2008

HALIFAX - A $500,000 partnership between Subway Restaurants and Atlantic University Sport (AUS) will allow more than 2,000 university students across Atlantic Canada to pursue both their athletic and academic dreams.

AUS executive director Phil Currie and Irwin Dawson, chair of the Atlantic Canada Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust, revealed the details of the agreement on Friday at the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. The deal positions Subway Restaurants as the exclusive quick-service restaurant partner of the AUS.

"Subway is delighted to partner with AUS because it allows us to play a role in promoting university sport, an important part of many students' post-secondary experience," said Dawson. "As an industry leader, we feel a responsibility to do our part to encourage physical activity, along with nutritious food choices."

Under the agreement, Subway becomes the title sponsor of all 16 AUS championships, while supporting all 11 AUS member athletic departments. In addition, the company's logo will be featured online, in print materials and at regular season AUS sporting events.

Subway will also be title sponsor of the Player of the Game and Athletes of the Week recognition programs. A Subway Player of the Game is recognized immediately after the game and receives a $10 gift card from the chain. The Subway Players of the Week (one male and one female) receive a framed certificate and a $50 gift card from Subway, and are recognized on the AUS website.

"This sponsorship with Subway is the first of its kind for our organization," said Currie. "Subway is an integral partner and team player for the future development of university sport in the Atlantic region."

The agreement runs until 2011.
