BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL COLLIDE: NEDA TOPS COPS & CATS IN CHARITY CLASH

Last Updated: April 04, 2009

HAMILTON - Football and basketball collided Wednesday night at McMaster University as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats joined the National Elite Development Academy (NEDA) boys team for a game of hoops in support of the Canadian Basketball Foundation.

The Tiger-Cats have been using basketball to present positive messages to Hamilton high school students for the past eight years through their Cops, Cats and Caring Students basketball initiative. Each spring, team members and officers from the Hamilton Police Services Board have teamed up to play afternoon matches against area high school teams to raise funds for the McMaster Children’s Hospital and connect with youth on a personal level. Throughout that time, the Cops and Cats earned an unbeaten record -- until Wednesday night.

Sporting custom TiCat basketball jerseys, 12 Tiger-Cats and three Hamilton police officers stepped onto the court to face their toughest competition to date. Fans in attendance enjoyed a back-and-forth first half of action, with the NEDA boys holding a 41-32 advantage at the break. NEDA pulled away in the second half, using a combination of Mike Allison's smooth inside shooting and sharpshooters from beyond the arc to record a final score of 91-54.

Police officers Jack Vanderpool, a McMaster basketball alumni, and Barry Mungar were the go-to scorers for the Ticat team. Vanderpool and Mungar led their team in scoring with 10 points each. Defensive lineman Darrel Adams, all 6 foot 5 inches and 282 pounds of him, was the top scorer among the Tiger-Cats as he bodied NEDA's big men inside for eight points.

NEDA was led by Jahenns Manigat who tallied 16 points, followed by Simon Bibeau with 13. The pair's outside shooting couldn't be matched by the Ticats despite the efforts of 5-foot-10-inch wide receiver Chris Davis who sank one three pointer of his own to finish with seven points.
