BASKETBALL BECOMES STANDARDIZED WITH FIBA RULES ACROSS CANADA
Last Updated: January 09, 2008
(Toronto, ON) Basketball Manitoba, the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association and the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association jointly announced that all levels of basketball played in the province will move to the FIBA, or international rule system, effective the 2007-08 season. The British Columbia High School Basketball Association (BCHSBA) has also announced recently that they will be adopting FIBA rules for next season. These announcements come after the CIS, CCAA, and other high school/club organizations (excluding Ontario high schools and colleges) have made the move to FIBA rules.
“We are thrilled to see the Canadian basketball community unite for the greater good of the sport”, stated Canada Basketball Executive Director and CEO, Fred Nykamp. “With almost everyone coming on board with the new FIBA rules, it allows for standard procedures across the country. These new rules will help the game grow and increase the development of everyone involved in the sport.”
This is the closest that Canada has been to a standard set of rules for the sport, and it is expected to help the growth of basketball for officials, coaches and players.
Basketball Manitoba Executive Director Adam Wedlake commented, “This is a major step forward as this move marks the first time in Manitoba basketball history that all levels of play will compete under the same set of rules. The FIBA system encourages a more up-tempo approach to the game and is seen as more of a player centered focus, which comes into line with the Long Term Athlete Development model that is being promoted across the county.”
Plans are under way to assist with the implementation process of FIBA rules across Canada, including coaching clinics, officials’ clinics, and a shot clock program.
