HAMILTON — You could see the play coming as soon as Canada got possession.
As Jermaine Anderson pushed the ball up the floor off of a New Zealand turnover, Dave Thomas ran the middle while Olu Famutimi filled the far lane of the three-on-one fast break.
The unfortunate Kiwi defender could only watch as a delicate Anderson lob lofted over his head, to be cradled in both hands by a ridiculously-high-in-the-air Famutimi and thrown down with a viciousness that brought the capacity Canada Day crowd to its feet.
The two-handed slam left the McMaster University gym buzzing, and tidily summed up a 90-63 drubbing of New Zealand by its Canadian hosts in the second game of the Jack Donohue International Classic (JDIC).
Despite a lacklustre start, the home team still managed to end the first half ahead by eight points and led by as many as 32.
Taking that same eight-point lead into the half, Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team came out in the second stanza and ran the Tall Blacks out of the gym, using their athleticism and speed to harass the Kiwis into 19 turnovers, which translated into 11 points for the hosts.
Rowan Barrett again led the Red and White with an incredibly efficient 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a torrid 5-of-8 performance from three-point range.
Famutimi, who was named player of the game, chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, while B.C. forward Levon Kendall posted a solid 16 points on 8-of-10 chances from the floor.
Kirk Penney led the Tall Blacks with a game high 26 points in the loss.
Despite the absence of starting centre Samuel Dalembert, who played a brief stretch in the second quarter before being given the day off to rest, the story of the game was a Canadian defence that rotated quickly and used its superior athleticism to contest shots and put immense pressure on the Kiwi ball handlers.
Canada finished with 11 steals and 5 blocks in the game, including two by Dave Thomas and Rowan Barrett that impressively came on three-point attempts.
The home squad now carries a 2-0 record in the Jack Donohue series, and will have two days off before facing New Zealand again on Friday, July 4 when the teams travel to Toronto for the final games of the exhibition event.
New Zealand will play Lebanon Wednesday night at McMaster to conclude the Hamilton portion of the JDIC.
