(Toronto, ON) 49 of Canada's elite women's basketball athletes today are bringing their game to Humber College in Toronto for five days to take part in the
2004 Nike All-Canada Camp, the official elite development camp of Canada Basketball and the most high-profile basketball training camp in the country.
Modeled after the prestigious Nike All-America Camp, which has turned out WNBA megastars such as Tamika Catchings, Sue Bird and Swin Cash, the Nike All-Canada Camp is an invite-only opportunity for Canada's basketball future to learn advanced training techniques, sharpen their playing skills and be taught a series of valuable life lessons that will help enable them to prepare for the challenges of life as a student-athlete.
The camp tips off today, when student athletes from all corners of the country will be put in front of an impressive line-up of guest speakers, elite coaching staff and sports psychologists for the ultimate taste of what it takes to succeed in the world of high-profile university/college athletics. In addition to the on-court skills development sessions, inter-squad scrimmages will give attendees an opportunity to showcase their skills for a host of CIS and NCAA scouts and recruiters.
On Sunday, July 11, the camp will conclude with the Nike All-Canada Camp Finals, including a 3-point shootout and an All-Star game. After the first four days of workouts and scrimmages, coaches will select the top 20 players to participate in the All-Star game, which is open to accredited media.
Athletes at the Nike All-Canada Camp will also spend 50% of their time in Life Skill Sessions. These workshops are conducted by recognized experts in their field and cover topics such as stress and time management, leadership and team building, nutrition and self-esteem, college selection, and goal setting. These invaluable sessions have been designed to help develop attendees into complete student-athletes.
Kevin Carr, who currently serves as Director of Player Programs for the NBA will be on hand to serve as a consultant for the Life Skills segment of the camp. Carr, who has an abundance of experience teaching Life Skills to student athletes, has been responsible for providing similar sessions to NBA players.
"The exposure that the Nike All-Canada Camp offers can obviously be a huge stepping-stone for some of these athletes, but it's equally important for us to provide access to the guidance that will help prepare them for the demands and expectations they will experience as they leave high school," said Derek Kent, Head of Corporate Communications, Nike Canada. "The teachings that our student-athletes take away from these sessions are invaluable.
Athlete selection to the Women's Nike All-Canada Camp is determined by the Provincial Basketball Associations and Canada Basketball based on agreed criteria. The Men's Nike All-Canada Camp kicks-off on July 13, 2004 both camps are closed to the public.
