Levon Kendall suffers serious ankle injury
ATHENS, Greece - Five players, led by Canadian Senior Men's National Team member Carl English, scored in double figures to power Caja Laboral to a 103-86 win over Maroussi B.C. on Wednesday in the fourth round of the Euroleague.
English had 17 points on 5-of-11 from the field (3-of-5 threes) and 4-of-5 from the line. He also had five assists in 28 minutes off the bench.
Mirza Teletovic and Fernando San Emeterio had 16 each for the Spanish club. Lior Eliyahu added 12 and Pau Ribas scored 10.
For Maroussi, Kostas Kaimakoglou scored a game-high 23 points.
"We played against a good and tough team, and this is a very important road win for us on the way to the Top 16," said Caja Laboral head coach Dusko Ivanovic.
"Usually I prefer to get the wins through our defence, but today it was all about offence. We had some great shots from outside, and when we took a lead, we kept on going."
Maroussi head coach Georgios Bartozokas admitted his team was outclassed. "This is the worst game we have played so far, but we have to realize where we are and who we play against. I have no complaints against my players, but it is clear that trying hard is not enough.
"We allowed our opponents to find some open and easy shots that killed us. The score got high and we are not able to follow this kind of game. In any case, we got a lesson which might be very useful in the future."
The loss wasn't the only bad news for Maroussi. Big man Levon Kendall, also a member of the Canadian National Team, will likely miss the rest of the Euroleague regular season after suffering an ankle injury.
Kendall landed awkwardly after leaping for an offensive rebound in the first quarter. The initial diagnosis shows ligament damage in his left ankle. He is expected to undergo surgery next week that would sideline him for several months. The team is already looking for a replacement.
Kendall, who joined Maroussi this summer from Panionios, averaged 5.8 points and 2.5 rebounds in four Euroleague games this season.
Wednesday's victory was the second road win in a row for Caja Laboral and raised its record in the Euroleague's Group C to 3-1. That will be good enough to either own second place or tie for first when the week ends.
Maroussi fell to 1-3 and fifth place heading into a one-week break in the regular season.
