Last Updated: November 17, 2009

VICTORIA - Greg Francis has suffered his first regular-season loss as head coach of the University of Alberta men's basketball team.

The Golden Bears' rookie coach, who also heads up Canada's Junior Men's National Team, watched Friday night as a 30-point second quarter propelled the University of Victoria Vikes (1-1) to a 74-66 victory.

The second-quarter eruption gave the Vikes a 46-28 halftime lead. Cyril Indome netted eight points during the decisive stretch and finished with 19 to lead all scorers.

"It was just another good battle -- we played hard, we knew our defensive assignments," said Indome, a native of Winnipeg. "We came out with a little bit of an edge and came out more aggressive."

The Vikes also received a big boost on the boards and owned a 38-30 advantage on the glass. Forwards Mike Berg and Wendell Thomas had 10 rebounds apiece, and both players completed double-doubles with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Ryan MacKinnon rounded out the Vikes' scoring leaders as the third-year guard from Comox contributed 14 points after knocking down three from behind the arc. The Vikes collectively made eight three-pointers and shot 45 per cent overall.

It was the first loss during conference play for Alberta (4-1), which had beaten Victoria 79-63 in the pre-season.

The leading scorer for Alberta was rookie guard Jordan Baker, a member of Canada's Junior National Team, who netted 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Sahr Saffa came off the bench to provide 12 points and Jamaal Bucknor shot 5-of-9 for 11 points. The Golden Bears shot 45 pe rcent, which included 10 three-pointers.
