SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Kayla Alexander of the Canadian Junior Women's National Team made her NCAA debut a memorable one.
The Milton, Ont., native just missed a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds, as the Syracuse women’s basketball team wore down Fairleigh Dickinson (Hackensack, N.J.) 65-45 on Friday.
“It was good to get the nerves out," Alexander said. "I think I can do better than what I did today. I am going to keep working hard and improving throughout the year.”
“Kayla is amazing," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "I am glad she’s here.
"When we were recruiting her, she was one of those players that we said we had to get. If we didn’t get anybody else in the class, we had to get her. That was our No. 1 priority."
Junior guard Erica Morrow said having a big target like the six-foot-four Alexander definitely helps.
"I know a lot of plays we can just toss the ball up there and we know that she will go get it. She is tall, she is athletic and she is long. She is the perfect centre.”
Three Orange players scored in double figures in the win, including senior guard Nicole Michael, Morrow and freshman guard Tyler Ash. Michael led the way for the Orange with 11 points and five rebounds, while Morrow and Ash each added 10 points.
The Knights and Orange battled for the lead in the first half, which featured seven ties and six lead changes. Syracuse had a 38-32 lead going into the half and held the Knights to a mere 13 points and a 16.1 shooting percentage in the second half en route to its 20-point victory.
Still, Knights head coach Peter Cinella said he was "very proud of the team. We did a great job.
"We had the lead at 32-31, and they hit a couple of big shots to end the first half. They outrebounded us pretty well in the second half. I am very proud of the team for battling."
Alyssa Mayrose of the Knights led all scorers with 19 points.
