KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic - Canada will face Australia, China and Belarus in Group A during the first round of the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women in the Czech Republic.

Championship organizers on Monday completed the draw to group the 16 participating nations into four groups of four teams each for first round play.

"Playing Australia, China and Belarus will give us a great opportunity to show the rest of the world the progress our program has made and how we stack up against the world’s best," said Allison McNeill, head coach of Canada's Senior Women's National Team.

"The world championship will give our athletes tremendous experience that we will carry forward to our ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. I love our team, we are getting better every summer and I think we are going to surprise people in 2010."

The championship will be played in the Czech Republic cities of Karlovy Vary (final round), Ostrava and Brno (first and second rounds) from Sept. 23-Oct. 3.

Canada will be playing its first-round games in Ostrava.
