TOP HIGH SCHOOL BALLERS TAKE PART IN NEW DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Last Updated: December 08, 2009

HAMILTON, Ont. - When Canada Basketball’s National Elite Development Academy (NEDA) based in Hamilton closed its doors, former assistant coach Tarry Upshaw saw the need for top quality high school basketball players to develop their skills together.

With this in mind, Upshaw launched his own program, the Regional Elite Development Academy (REDA), a pilot project accredited by Canada Basketball.

The REDA program brings some of the top male high school players from across Ontario under one roof where they improve their skills on the court in hopes of landing college scholarships and other opportunities.

Upshaw, REDA'S head coach, says he uses a three-tiered approach to the players' development.

“The first part of our season we let the players get comfortable with each other within the team concept," Upshaw said. "The second step is working on improving individually, using video to look at performance and then position drills to improve their own games.

“And finally we take what they learned on their own and put that back into the team concept. The way we’re doing this is going to make the player better, as well as everyone around him.”

The REDA team’s schedule includes exhibitions and tournaments across Ontario and the United States from October through April. Games are played against college, prep and high school teams. The team will then take part in an elite men’s league based in Hamilton from April through June.

“I saw how effective Canada Basketball’s National Elite Development Academy was when I was the assistant coach of the program,” said Upshaw. “I thought I could take a similar model and develop players on a regional level. I’ve got a great coaching staff and these players are going to benefit from what we’re offering them.”
