ANDERSON SCORES 13 IN CROATIAN TEAM'S EUROCHALLENGE LOSS

Last Updated: January 14, 2010

CHALON-SUR-SAÔNE, France - Jermaine Anderson of the Canadian Senior Men's National Team scored 13 points in Cedevita Zagreb's 80-77 loss to ÉS Chalon-sur-Saône in Group D of the EuroChallenge on Tuesday.

Anderson was 5-of-10 from the field (1-of-6 threes) and had five rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes.

Taj Allen Gray had 24 points and eight rebounds for the French team, which can claim the group's top spot if it wins next week at home against Proteas EKA AEL in a battle of teams with 3-2 records.

Zagreb and Dexia are 2-3 and still have an outside chance to qualify for the Last 16.

The EuroChallenge is is the top men's professional basketball competition directly run by FIBA Europe.

The EuroChallenge is considered the third strongest international basketball competition for men's clubs in Europe behind both the Euroleague and the Eurocup, both of which fall under the supervision of the Union of European Leagues of Basketball (ULEB).

One of the biggest plays in Tuesday's contest came with seven seconds remaining.

Blake Schilb made the first of two free throws to give Élan Chalon a 78-76 lead but missed the second. Cedevita failed to box out Gray, who grabbed the offensive rebound and drew a foul. He made one of two for a three-point lead.

Élan Chalon fouled Anderson and the Canadian point guard missed the first free throw but made the second.

Cedevita fouled to stop the clock and Schilb made one more free throw for the win.

Bazdaric Marino led the Croatian side with 22 points.

The teams were tied at 23 after the first quarter and the French team enjoyed a seven-point lead at the half.

"We lost the game in the first quarter when Chalon scored 23 points," said Cedevita coach Nino Primorac. "We defended better in the second half, but we made too many mistakes and the defeat came naturally."

Élan Chalon coach Gregor Beugnot was upset that his team has a letdown in the final quarter, when they were outscored 23-18. "We need to keep our discipline during the entire 40 minutes of the contest," he said.
