CANADA PREPARES FOR FIBA U17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS

Last Updated: February 05, 2010

FIBA, the world governing body of basketball, will be conducting draws on Feb. 10 and Feb. 12 respectively for the inaugural editions of the FIBA U17 World Championships for men and women.

Canada has successfully qualified for both world class events. The Cadette (U17) women earned a silver medal at the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship last summer, while the Cadet men claimed third place at the tournament.

“This is truly an historical moment for our country to be participating in the first ever U17 World Championships,” said Wayne Parrish, CEO & Executive Director for Canada Basketball. “The fact that Canada is one of only six nations to qualify for both of these global competitions is a great testament to the calibre of talent of our young athletes.”

The draw for the U17 Championship for Men will be held on Feb. 10 at 13:00 CET (7:00 a.m. ET) at the University of Hamburg. Fans can see the draw live on the event website www.hamburg2010.fiba.com.

Along with Canada, the following teams qualified for the U17 Championship for Men and will be going into the draw: Argentina, Australia, China, Egypt, Germany, Korea, Lithuania, Poland, Serbia, Spain and USA.

The draw for the U17 Championship for Women will be held on Feb. 12 at 11:00 CET (5:00 a.m. EST) at the Hôtel de Région in Toulouse and can been seen live on the event website www.france2010.fiba.com, which will be launched for this occasion.

Canada and the following teams have qualified for the U17 Championship for Women and will be going into the draw: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, China, France, Japan, Mali, Russia, Spain, Turkey and USA.

In both cases, the draw will divide the 12 teams into two groups of six. The top four teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals.

“These tournaments serve as a great opportunity for our young athletes to compete against the best basketball players in the world in their age group,” added Parrish. “This experience is so valuable in establishing a vision for their elite development pathway as they strive to become world class athletes at the senior level.”

FIBA Secretary General and IOC Member Patrick Baumann said, “The U17 Championships, to be held in mid-summer, will serve as ideal curtain-raisers for our flagship competitions, the FIBA World Championships for Men and Women.

"Don’t be surprised if you see many of these youngsters making the cut in four years time. These draws represent one more step towards a summer of unprecedented international basketball action.”

The FIBA U17 Championship for Men will be held in Hamburg, Germany, from July 2-11, while the U17 Championship for Women will be held in Toulouse, France, from July 16-25. The teams qualified for each tournament during the 2009 U16 Continental Zone Championships.

Both U17 Championships will be played for the first time in 2010 and will, in future, be held every two years.
