ZAGREB, Croatia - Caja Laboral battled back from an early double-digit deficit to sting Cibona 75-78 on Thursday at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center in the Croatian capital.
Mirza Teletovic sank the go-ahead three with 1:22 remaining, Carl English added two clutch free throws with 20 seconds to play and the Laboral defence denied Cibona in the closing seconds to give head coach Dusko Ivanovic's side its first win in Group H of the Euroleague's Top 16.
English, a member of Canada Basketball's Senior Men's National Team which qualified for the World Championships in Turkey this summer, contributed 17 points, making 4-of-5 three pointers.
"We are missing a lot of players right now and I just felt I needed to step up and do whatever I could to help the team win," English said. "We knew Cibona was a scrappy team, that they had a lot of close wins and that they are playing super-hard."
Cibona got off to a strong start taking an early 7-0 lead. Laboral struggled to make shots early as Cibona continued to extend their lead to 33-16. Laboral managed to stage a comeback in the first half going on a 7-0 run, and ending the half with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 41-33 at halftime.
Caja Laboral took the lead on Teletovic's basket with 1:22 remaining in the game and never relinquished it.
Cibona had a chance to win the game on a last-second shot, but Leon Radosevic and Marko Tomas, who finished with a team-high 22 points, both missed. English grabbed the ball and ran downcourt, passing the ball to Lior Eliyahu, who scored at the buzzer to wrap a 75-78 Caja Laboral win.
Eliyahu was the Spanish team's top scorer with 22 points.
