CANADA’S ELITE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS TRAIN FOR LIFE AS STUDENT ATHLETES IN TORONTO

Top 54 women’s High School Basketball players prepare to showcase their skills at the most high-profile basketball training camp in the country

(Toronto) 54 of Canada’s elite women’s basketball athletes are bringing their best game to Humber College in Toronto for five days of on-court and in-class skill development. Nike’s 2005 All-Canada Camp is the official elite development camp of Canada Basketball.

Based on the prestigious Nike All-America Camp, the Nike All-Canada Camp has uncovered WNBA megastars such as Swin Cash, Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird. This invite-only opportunity for Canada’s basketball future, encourages players to learn advanced basketball techniques, sharpen their playing skills and be taught a series of valuable life lessons that will help enable them to prepare for the challenges of life as a student-athlete.

Student-athletes nation-wide arrived yesterday in Toronto for registration. Players will be witness to an impressive lineup of guest speakers including elite coaching staff, former athletes and sports psychologists resulting in the ultimate taste of what it takes to succeed in the world of high-profile university/college athletics. In addition to on-court skill development sessions, inter-squad scrimmages will also give attendees the opportunity to showcase their skills for a host of CIS and NCAA scouts and recruiters.

Saturday, July 9th the Nike All-Canada Camp Finals will mark the camp’s conclusion, including a three-point shootout and an All-Star game. Following the first four days of workouts and scrimmages, coaches will select the top 20 players to participate in the All-Star game, open to accredited media.

Nike All-Canada Camp athletes will spend 50 per cent of their time in the Life Skill Sessions. Recognized field experts conduct these workshops; covering a vast array of topics ranging from leadership, health and fitness, team building and interviewing techniques. These invaluable sessions have been designed to help develop attendees into complete student athletes. Kevin Carr, who currently serves as Director of Players Programs for the NBA will be on hand to serve as a consultant for the Life Skills segment of the camp. Carr has also provided similar sessions to professional NBA players.

2005 Nike All-Canada Camp….

“Along with increased exposure, Nike All-Canada Camp covers all aspects of athlete development, from on-court drill sessions to in class discussions. At the same time, it is equally important for us to provide access to the guidance needed for the demands and expectations following the end of high school,” said Derek Kent, head of corporate communications, Nike Canada. “There are so many aspects from which the athletes can benefit from, making these sessions invaluable.”

“The Nike All-Canada Camps are an example of Nike and Canada Basketball’s commitment to developing elite-level athletes,” said Fred Nykamp, Executive Director and CEO of Canada Basketball. “We are pleased to a part of this camp that brings together players from across the country and is congruent with Canada Basketball’s “Be One” philosophy,“ he added.

Athlete selection of the women’s Nike All-Canada Camp is determined by the Provincial Basketball Association and Canada Basketball based on agreed criteria. The Men’s Nike All-Canada Camp will take place from July 11 - 16, 2005 – both camps are closed to the public.
