13 CANADIANS STILL IN CONTENTION FOR NCAA TITLE AS SWEET 16 BEGINS TONIGHT

TORONTO, ON (March 22, 2018) - With the first two rounds of the 2018 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournaments in the books, March Madness has delivered several major upsets and historical defeats so far. Of the 32 teams remaining in both the men's and women's national championships, 13 Canadian players have advanced to the Sweet 16.

Kia Nurse and her top-seeded University of Connecticut Huskies made history on Saturday, defeating (16) Saint Francis (PA) in record breaking fashion. The Hamilton, Ont. native posted a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds, in the victory. The Huskies then handled (9) Quinnipiac with ease, setting up their next matchup on Saturday vs (5) Duke at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Surrey, B.C. native Aislinn Konig and her NC State Wolfpack teammates advanced to the Sweet 16 after defeating (13) Elon and (5) Maryland last weekend. The two-time British Columbia Player of the Year averaged 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists over the two games.  The Wolfpack will have their work cut out for them as they'll face (1) Mississippi State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET.  With a victory, NC State would advance to the Elite 8 for the first time since 1998.

Freshman phenom Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to put the world on notice in his first season with the Kentucky Wildcats. Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as a top prospect this season, earning the SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player award and first-team All-Freshman honors in the process. The Hamilton, Ont. native filled up the box score in two impressive wins over (12) Davidson and (13) Buffalo, averaging 23 points, 7 rebounds and 6.5 assists. His strong play will be put to the test as Kentucky will be matched up against a resilient (9) Kansas State squad in a battle of the Wildcats on Thursday night at 9:37 p.m. ET.

From one Canadian rookie to another, Syracuse standout Oshae Brissett was involved in one of the many upsets over the weekend, taking down (3) Michigan State 55-53.  As the final team to advance into the tournament, the Orange hope the Mississauga, Ont. native can help take them back to the Elite 8 for the first time since 2016.  Averaging a strong 15 points and 9 rebounds in wins over (6) TCU and previously mentioned Spartans, Brissett will now have his sights on surprising a strong (2) Duke team on Saturday at 9:37 p.m. ET.
