ACADIA UNIVERSITY TO HOST STEVE NASH YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM
TORONTO, ON (March 28, 2017) – Canada Basketball and Steve Nash Youth Basketball (SNYB) are excited to announce Acadia University (Wolfville, Nova Scotia) as the newest SNYB program host. Working with Basketball Nova Scotia, Acadia will soon offer high-quality youth grassroots basketball within the Wolfville community.
“Basketball Nova Scotia is very proud to partner with the Acadia University Women's Basketball program in bringing Steve Nash Youth Basketball to Wolfville,” said Ryan Dickison, Operations Manager for Basketball Nova Scotia. “Both Len Harvey (Head Coach) and Kevin Dickie (Director of Athletics) believe in and subscribe to the pillars identified as priorities in the SNYB program.”
Acadia is the latest Canadian post-secondary institution to endorse and host SNYB, after Cape Breton University announced its commitment in February.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Canada Basketball and Basketball Nova Scotia to run the Steve Nash Youth Basketball program here on Stu Aberdeen Court at Acadia,” said Len Harvey, head coach of Acadia’s women’s basketball team. “We feel the program is very comprehensive and does a great job of introducing young kids to the game while helping them to have fun and enjoy basketball.”
Harvey also believes SNYB has an impact that goes beyond just basketball.
“We have a role to play as a university basketball program in supporting our community and encouraging active living and multi-sport development.”
Ron Yeung, Manager – Domestic Development at Canada Basketball sees this partnership as an indicator that the growth of basketball in Canada is in good hands moving forward.
“We are happy to have Acadia University join the SNYB team,” said Yeung. “Acadia is the second university to come on board in the last two months, which is another step in the right direction for Canada Basketball and Basketball Nova Scotia”
Based on the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, SNYB attempts to develop the complete individual first, before the complete athlete. With the support of SNYB presenting partner, Tangerine, the enhanced program curriculum puts emphasis on the key values of teamwork, leadership and inclusiveness. The program also ensures that all activities are age and stage appropriate to the athletes who are participating, helping to maximize participation and facilitate development.
