Canada Defeats Italy 67-62, Improves to 4-1

Toronto, ON - The Women’s National Team earned another victory this afternoon in Arras, France, defeating Italy 67-62.

“Italy came an brought a lot of physicality to the game and a lot of defensive pressure, that disrupted our offensive flow,“ said Head Coach Lisa Thomaidis.

Miah-Marie Langlois lead the way for Canada scoring 11 points on 4-9 FG while also adding three blocks. Miranda Ayim scored eight points while collecting nine rebounds to lead the team in that department. Giorgia Sottana provided a spark off the bench for Italy, scoring a game-high 16 points. Italy scored the first points of the game but Canada bounced back with a 9-0 run that came via three straight 3-pointers. Italy fought back to tie the game at 16 as the teams played to a draw in the first quarter.

The teams were locked at 26 mid way through the quarter and then tied once more at 30 with 2:30 remaining in the half. Canada opened up a small lead and Kim Gaucher closed the half with a 3-pointer to give Canada an eight-point advantage.

Italy managed to cut to lead to six at the half way mark of the third quarter but Canada battled and led by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Italy fought back from a 16-point deficit to cut Canada’s lead to just four following an 11-0 run. Ultimately, Canada was able to hold off the Italians and improve to 4-1 on the exhibition tour.

“It was definitely a grind but we toughed it out and exceeded our goals,” said Miah-Marie Langlois after the game.
