Canada Basketball is proud to announce the 23 young men vying for a position on the 2013 Cadet Men’s National Team (CMNT) and the talented group of individuals who will lead the squad. Returning head coach Dave DeAveiro will guide the staff and players as the team prepares for this summer’s competitive season.

The native of Toronto, Ont., brings a wealth of experience and a winning tradition to this group. The current head coach of the McGill Redmen, coach DeAveiro owns an expansive resume of international experience, having served as the assistant coach on several of Canada Basketball’s teams throughout his career. He is joined once again by assistants Barnaby Craddock of Abbotsford, B.C. and Stephan Barrie of Kingston, Ont.

Ajax, Ont. native Justin Jackson is the lone returning member from the team that finished in fifth place at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship for Men in Kaunas, Lithuania. The impressive mix of youth, power and athleticism present for this week’s tryout will make head coach DeAveiro’s task of trimming this roster an unenviable one.

Canada Basketball’s Assistant General Manager and Executive Vice-president of the Senior Men’s Program, Rowan Barrett, appreciates the level of talent he has seen, but recognizes there is still work to be done. “This is a strong group of young men hoping to make this team. When determining the final roster, coachability, fit and the skill of the athletes are all important characteristics to be considered.”

When asked about this week’s open tryout, Barrett noted that, “we have seen such a tremendous amount of growth within the sport. More than 70 promising athletes attended the open session. The group who do not make the cut in the next few days still represent the strength of basketball in Canada right now.”

The CMNT will continue to train and practice out of Ryerson University’s Kerr Hall Gymnasium in preparation for the FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Men. The five-day tournament is set to take place June 11-15 in Maldonado, Uruguay. Canada will compete in Group B against Chile, Puerto Rico and the host nation.
