JUNIOR WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM DETAILS RELEASED

The Junior Women’s National Team (JWNT) will begin preparations for the summer competitive season with a tryout by invitation from June 26-27 at Durham College. 20 invited athletes will take the court in Oshawa, Ont. in hopes of being selected to compete at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship in Lithuania.

Head coach Rich Chambers of Port Moody, B.C. looks forward to assembling this year’s team. “Our athletes have trained hard over the last year and we are all very anxious to see how we stack up against the world. Everyone is excited and ready for camp to start so we can begin learning and growing together as a team.”

Chambers will be joined by assistants Donna Branch and Scott Edwards to form a talented and experienced coaching staff. The trio have a wealth of international experience from previous appointments to Team Canada. Lethbridge, Alberta’s Branch, a former national team player, will be making her sixth appearance as a coach with the women’s national team program while Edwards, an Edmonton, Alberta native who serves as the head coach of the University of Alberta Pandas, will take part in his third stint with the program.

“Our coaching staff is extremely excited for the team and the upcoming competition. For athletes, very little compares to matching your skills, knowledge and competitiveness against the best players and teams in the world at your age group. Panevezys will be a wonderful experience and hopefully we will make Canada Basketball and the entire country proud,” said Chambers when asked about the challenge ahead.

The tryout by invitation will be immediately followed by a nine-day training camp. The JWNT will engage in a pair of exhibition competitions in France and Spain before traveling to Lithuania for the World Championship. The 11-day tournament will begin on July 18 and see Canada take-on the globe’s best teams for the title of world champion.
