U19 Women's National Team Loses to USA 93-45 in FIBA World Championships Quarterfinals

Toronto, ON - The U19 Women's National Team's Quarterfinal game ended in an 93-45 loss to the United States at the FIBA World Championships in Chekhov, Russia.

Kamloops native, Emma Piggin finished the game with 8 points on 3-5 shooting to go along with 2 rebounds while Mael Gilles chipped in with a 7 points and 5 rebounds. America's Napheesa Collier finished with 12 points while shooting 46% from the field. For a full box score, click here.

Canada stumbled out of the gate as the Americans went on an 11-0 run to start the game. Piggin was Canada's bright spot in the quarter as she played solid defense and scored a three-pointer in the frame. Heading into the second quarter, USA led Canada 28-5.

Canada looked to bounce back in the second frame as they trailed the USA. Chatham native, Bridget Carleton had herself a nice quarter as she scored 4 points while grabbing a rebound and dishing an assist. After the Americans went on another 11-0 run, the Canadians trailed 55-17.

Coming out of the half, Canada hoped to salvage the game. Off of the bench, Gilles scored 5 points and grabbed 3 rebounds, but it was not nearly enough as the Americans maintained their lead and outscored Canada in the quarter - 19-10. Going into the fourth quarter, Canada trailed USA 74-27.

The U19 Women's National Team played freely in the fourth quarter by knocking down four three-pointers in the frame. Julia Chandler and Danielle Garven played well in the fourth as they each scored 6 points and dished out 4 assists between the two of them. The final quarter was competitive as Canada almost outscored the Americans - 19-18. The game ended in a 93-45 loss.

Team Canada will play in a 5-8 Classification Game against Belgium on July 25 in Chekhov, Russia. The teams have met earlier in the tournament with Canada falling short - 67-52.
