Canada’s Men’s & Women’s Senior National Teams Qualify for 2024 Paralympics

Osaka, JPN. (April 23, 2024) - The Canadian Women’s Senior National Team secured their Paralympic berth with a win over Algeria at the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Repechage Tournament shortly after the Men’s Senior National Team qualified for the 2024 Paralympics earlier last week.

The Canadian women went undefeated in group play, placing them at the top of Group B ahead of their matchup against Algeria. They followed it up with a strong 88-30 victory over Algeria to punch their ticket. Kady Dandeneau led the team all week, averaging 25.3 points per game through all four wins.

The Repechage Tournament was the last chance for teams who did not qualify for the Paris Games through their zone qualifier to qualify for the 2024 Paralympic Games. The Canadian SWNT finished fifth at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Despite losing their first three games, the Canadian men’s team produced a solid 72-60 win over Italy on Monday to secure their spot in the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Patrick Anderson and Colin Higgins were standouts for Canada, often leading the team in scoring and rebounds.

The Canadian SMNT previously won gold at the Paralympics in 2000, 2004, and 2012. They have not missed a Paralympic appearance since 1968. Both the women’s and men’s national teams are now officially set to compete side-by-side at the 2024 Paralympics.
