Gilgeous-Alexander, Belmore named Toyota Canada Players of the Week

TORONTO, Ont. (Nov. 20, 2023) - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jade Belmore have been named the Toyota Canada Players of the Week for Nov. 13-19.

SGA just keeps doing his thing. Gilgeous-Alexander was unbelievable once again, helping him become the first back-to-back Toyota Canada Player of the Week in recent memory. The Hamilton, Ont. product helped the Oklahoma City Thunder to wins in each of their four games this past week — including in an overtime thriller over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night. He scored 40 points on 18-29 from the field, to go along with seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks. He averaged more than 30 points on 56 per cent shooting — including 46 per cent shooting from beyond-the-arc over the four games. Gilgeous-Alexander starred for Canada this past summer, where he helped lead the Senior Men’s National Team to a FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 bronze medal and berth in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

After playing a key role for Canada’s U23 Women’s National Team at GLOBL JAM this past summer, Belmore has been a difference maker once again for the Regina Cougars to begin the 2023-24 Canada West season. Belmore, a product of Regina, helped her hometown school pick up a pair of big wins on the road over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack this past weekend. Belmore led the way on Friday, scoring 30 points on 10-17 shooting — her third-ever 30-point night in her U SPORTS career — to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. She finished the weekend in style, putting up a 20-point performance on Saturday on 9-15 shooting, adding four rebounds, four steals and three assists. The 2022-23 U SPORTS Second-Team All-Canadian made her National Team debut this past summer in Toronto, where she helped Canada to a 3-1 record at GLOBL JAM where the squad claimed silver after falling to the Louisville Cardinals in the gold medal game.
