Mustangs, Ravens, Thunderbirds and Tigers Advance to Semifinals at U Sports National Championships

Men’s Quarterfinal 1: Western Mustangs defeat Alberta Golden Bears

OTTAWA (U SPORTS) – Omar Shiddo, Eriq Jenkins, Aryan Sharma, and Nikola Farkic all scored in double figures during the Western Mustangs’ decisive 86-72 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday in their men’s quarterfinal game at the 2020 U SPORTS Final 8 Basketball Championships.

Shiddo had 24 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Mustangs, while Brody Clarke and had 17 points and 13 rebounds in a losing cause for the Golden Bears.

Western shot 45.9 per cent from the field and 60.7 per cent from three, compared to Alberta’s 46.9 per cent shooting and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.

With the win, Western advances to play the winner of Calgary and Carleton on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. PT in the men’s championship semifinals, while Alberta takes on the loser of Calgary and Carleton in the men’s consolation semifinals at 1:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 a.m. PT Saturday at the Ravens Nest.

Men’s Quarterfinal #2: Carleton defeats Calgary to advance to semis

OTTAWA (U SPORTS)– Isiah Osborne scored 20 points and added six rebounds as Carleton topped Calgary 82-66 in their men’s quarterfinal game at the 2020 U SPORTS Final 8 Basketball Championships on Friday at The Arena at TD Place.  

Biniam Grebrekidan added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Carleton, while U SPORTS Player of the Year Brett Layton had 23 points and 16 rebounds in a losing cause for Calgary.

Carleton shot 43.9 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from three, compared to Calgary’s 37.5 per cent shooting and 21.1 percent from beyond the arc.

With the win, Carleton advances to play Western Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET / 12:00 p.m. PT in the men’s semifinal while Calgary takes on Alberta in the men’s consolation semifinal at 1:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 a.m. PT at the Ravens Nest.

Men’s Quarterfinal 3: UBC dominates Bishop’s to advance to semifinals

OTTAWA (U SPORTS)– Grant Audu scored 25 points and added seven rebounds as the UBC Thunderbirds dominated the Bishop’s Gaiters 103-66 in their men’s quarterfinal game at the 2020 U SPORTS Final 8 Basketball Championships on Friday at The Arena at TD Place.

Jadon Cohee added 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists for UBC, while Ibrahim Ngom had 16 points and three assists in a losing cause for Bishop’s.

UBC shot 50 per cent from the field and 45.8 per cent from three, compared to the Gaiters’ 28.2 per cent shooting and 22.2 percent from beyond the arc.

With the win, UBC advances to play the winner of Dalhousie/Ottawa on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET in the men’s semifinal, while Bishop’s takes on the loser in the men’s consolation semifinal at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday at the Ravens Nest

Men’s Quarterfinal #4: Dalhousie Tigers defeat Ottawa Gee-Gees

OTTAWA (U SPORTS) – Sascha Kappos’ dunk with 1:10 remaining proved to be winner as the Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 67-63 in their men’s quarterfinal game at the 2020 U SPORTS Final 8 Basketball Championships on Friday.  

Keevan Veinot added 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists for Dalhousie, while Guillaume Pépin had 23 points and 15 rebounds in a losing cause for Ottawa.

Dalhousie shot 41 per cent from the field and 53 per cent from three, compared to the Gee-Gees’ 37 per cent shooting and 21 percent from beyond the arc.

With the win, the Tigers advances to play the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, March 7 at 8 p.m.  in the men’s championship semifinals, while the Gee-Gees will take on the Bishop’s Gaiters in the men’s consolation semifinals on March 7 at 5 p.m.
