The Naismith Notes: All-Star Shai Has Arrived
This past Thursday, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander officially became an NBA All-Star. The Hamilton native is averaging 30.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game in his fifth season while shooting 51 percent from the floor, 36 percent from beyond the arc and 91 percent from the free throw line.

“It’s a good feeling,” he said. “It’s on a long list of goals of mine. I was able to accomplish it and it’s a really good feeling.”
Gilgeous-Alexander found out the news along with everyone else, when it was announced by the NBA on TNT crew last Thursday night. “Every kid sits down, watches all-star weekend and looks forward to the events,” he said. “It’s really an honour to be a part of. I worked hard and I’m glad it paid off.”

With the honour, Gilgeous-Alexander became the fourth Canadian to be named to an All-Star Game roster, joining Andrew Wiggins, Jamaal Magloire and Steve Nash. The 24-year-old will be joining the rest of the NBA’s biggest stars in Salt Lake City for All-Star Weekend kicking off on February 17th.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault spoke about the distinction and what it means for a young Thunder team that is trying to make a playoff push in the Western Conference.
“Because of the person he is, it's powerful when one of your hardest workers, one of your most committed guys is rewarded for that individually,” Daigneault said. “I think it sends a strong signal to the program, to the rest of the group. His commitment, it makes it particularly sweet because we’re obviously trying to build something. We have been for the past couple of years and he’s had his sleeves rolled up on that. For him to get rewarded for that is great.”
Over in Denver, Jamal Murray dropped 41 points in a 128-108 Nuggets victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. He shot 15-for-24 from the floor including 7-for-12 from beyond the arc, while adding five rebounds and seven assists in 36 minutes. This came after a 33-point performance in a win against Golden State and a 32-point performance against New Orleans. Murray is averaging 20.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 32.5 minutes per game in his sixth NBA season.

Shifting to the W, we’ve got some Canadian free agency news. Kia Nurse announced she will be headed to Seattle to play with the Storm this upcoming WNBA season. Nurse will be coached by Senior Women’s National Team lead assistant Noelle Quinn who has been Seattle’s head coach since the 2021 season.

After missing all of the 2022 WNBA season for ACL rehabilitation, Nurse made her return to the court with the SWNT at the FIBA 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia where she helped Canada to a fourth-place finish.

In NCAA action, Keishana Washington continues to reach new heights. The 5-foot-7 Drexel Dragons guard hit the go-ahead bucket to lead Drexel to a 65-64 victory over Stony Brook on Sunday with a 40-point performance. Washington shot 14-for-29 from the floor and made all 10 of her free throws in 33 minutes of action. This was Washington’s 56th consecutive game reaching double figures and she scored 16 of her 40 in the fourth quarter where she went 7-for-9 from the floor to lead Drexel in the win. Washington is third in NCAA scoring, averaging 27.0 points per game.

Aaliyah Edwards joined yet another new points club this week. Edwards scored 25 points in 29 minutes on Sunday to push her over the 1,000th career points scored threshold. The 6-foot-3 junior is averaging 17.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for the UConn Huskies this season and was also named a finalist for the 2023 Katrina McClain Award last week.

Purdue’s Zach Edey was named Big Ten Player of the Week…again. This is the the sixth time Edey has earned the honour, making him just the second player in Boilermakers history to accomplish this feat in a single season. Edey is averaging 22.4 points, 13.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game this season.

McMaster Marauders star Sarah Gates broke the school’s all-time scoring record amid a nine-game winning streak for the Women’s Basketball Team. Gates is leading the country in scoring with a 26.1 point-per-game average, while also averaging 8.1 rebounds per contest. Gates surpassed the previous high of 1719 points set by former U SPORTS Player of the Year and current McMaster Women’s Basketball assistant coach Danielle Boiago. Gates broke the record with a three-pointer in the third quarter.

Finally, we’ve got to give a shout out to the Senior Women’s National Team who are together in France for a training camp in Villeneuve d’Ascq before playing a pair of exhibition games against ESB Villeneuve-d-Ascq. Members of the current Senior Women’s National Team, as well as members of the NextGen age-group athletes are taking part in the camp which gives the team another opportunity to prepare in advance of this summer’s upcoming Women’s AmeriCup.

“After a successful camp in November in Toronto, we’re looking forward to getting back together next week in France and re-connecting as a team as we continue to build,” Team Canada head coach Víctor Lapeña said. “The FIBA Women’s AmeriCup later this summer not only presents an opportunity for us to get back on the podium, but take another step towards the Paris 2024 Olympics.”
