More Information
Safe Sport
Canada Basketball is committed to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all its athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers, that is free from abuse, harassment, and discrimination.
Education
Canada Basketball recognizes its responsibility to foster a sport environment that ensures positive, healthy and fulfilling experiences. It is imperative that all coaches be trained on conduct to prevent and address maltreatment. All coaches, team managers, IST staff and referees are required to complete the safe sport training module, available via the Coaching Association of Canada - Safe Sport website. The safe sport module is a free, 90-minute online module that gives all participants the tools to recognize, address, and prevent maltreatment in sport. The module aligns with the principles of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport and meets Sport Canada requirements for Safe Sport education.
Prevention
All coaches, team managers, staff, volunteers, and referees involved with the National Championships are required to have a completed criminal record/background check in the form of an Enhanced Police Information Check (E-PIC) issued within 36 months of the event. Coaches can provide their own valid copy from the past 3 years or apply for one online at www.mybackcheck.com. Further details can be found in Canada Basketball’s Screening Policy for Coaches.
Response
Canada Basketball encourages reporting of all incidents where abuse, discrimination, and harassment is perceived regardless of whom the offender may be or the context. This is essential in ensuring accountability by identifying risks to athletes and mitigating unsafe sport environments and behaviour posing threats to athletes.
Canada Basketball knows how important it can be to provide a safe and secure way of reporting issues that are impacting an individual directly or that they have become aware of. As required by Sport Canada, all complaints reporting will be managed by an Independent Third-Party Safe Sport Officer. For concerns/complaints, or to report or discuss incidents of abuse or harassment of any kind related to Canada Basketball events/activities, we encourage individuals to contact ITP Sport directly at:
https://app.integritycounts.ca/org/itpsport
Complaints submitted via the online link can only be accessed by ITP Sport.
