A.J. Lawson and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe named Toyota Players of the Week for January 4-10

A.J. Lawson and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe have been selected as the Toyota Players of the Week for January 4-10.

AJ Lawson kicked off the new year with an impressive performance over Texas A&M, where he scored a career-high 30 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out two assists. The South Carolina guard also shot 46% from the floor, netting 7/8 free throws. Lawson, who’s currently in his junior year with the Gamecocks, was previously named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2018 and was on the Jerry West Award watch list during his sophomore year. The 20-year-old from Brampton, ON won a silver medal with Canada at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in 2018, posting a team-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. He also competed FIBA U19 World Cup 2019, where he led Canada in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game and put up an event-high 31 points against Senegal.

Meanwhile, Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe put up 24 points and 10 rebounds in Lyon’s game against BLMA to earn her Player of the Week title. In November, the 29-year-old also earned POTW honours for her performance against Tarbes. Before moving overseas, the Toronto, ON native attended Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, helping them win a CIS national title during the 2009-10 season. Since then, Ekunwe has played for the WNBA’s New York Liberty and in in Australia, France and Germany. She’s represented Canada for nearly a decade and has competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics, the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018, FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2019 and most recently helped Canada book their ticket for Tokyo 2020 at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgium last February. She also helped lead Canada to a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games and 2015 FIBA Americas Championship for Women.
