Canada Advances to the Quarter-finals After Defeating Argentina at FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2019

BANGKOK, THAILAND (July 24, 2019) – Canada defeated Argentina 82-50 on Wednesday morning in the Round of 16 at the FIBA U19 Women’sBasketball World Cup 2019.

Justina King led Canada in scoring with 19 points while Aaliyah Edwards recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Christina Morra also had 11 points and seven rebounds in the win while Sarah Te-Biasu contributed 13 points. Florencia Chagas recorded a game-high 20 points in the loss for Argentina.

Canada started the first quarter on a 5-0 run, but it was not long before Argentina was right behind them. A close first quarter saw the two teams within points of each other until the 42-second mark when a layup made by Taya Hanson tied the game. At the buzzer, the two teams were tied 17-17.

After being tied to start the quarter, Canada was up by eight just three minutes into the frame. Canada ended up outscoring Argentina 22-7 by the end of the second quarter and entered the halftime up 39-24.

Similar to the second quarter, Canada outscored Argentina 23-9. Morra scored nine out of her 11 points in the third quarter alone. By the end of the frame, the team was up 62-33.

In the last quarter, Team Canada continued to increase their lead. With the quarter's field goal shooting percentage being 59.3%, Canada ended the game with a 32-point advantage. The 82-50 final score allowed Canada to advance to the quarter-finals with ease.

Canada earned a historic bronze medal at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017 in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy. The bronze was Canada’s first medal in eight appearances at the event since it began in 1985. Last summer, the team earned a silver medal at the FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championship 2018 in Mexico City, Mexico. Canada is currently ranked 4th worldwide in the FIBA World Ranking Presented by NIKE.
