TORONTO (April 9, 2026) — Canada Basketball is saddened to share the passing of Robert Comeau, a pioneering figure in the development of basketball in Québec, who passed away at the age of 85.

A lifelong contributor to the game, Comeau played an instrumental role in building the foundation of basketball in Québec and shaping its development pathway. His impact spanned decades as a coach, administrator, and ambassador for the sport.

Comeau began his basketball journey as a player at Collège Mont Saint-Louis in Montréal before continuing at the collegiate and senior levels with the Faucons de Saint-Jean. He later transitioned into coaching, where he quickly made his mark — including leading a youth team in Saint-Jean to an impressive 118–33 record.

His commitment to development extended beyond the court. Comeau regularly attended coaching clinics across North America, bringing knowledge and innovation back to Québec. In 1971, he led Team Québec to a gold medal at the Canada Games — a feat he would repeat in 1975.

He went on to become the first Technical Director of the Fédération de basketball du Québec and later served as Executive Director, helping guide the organization through a period of significant growth. A visionary builder, Comeau was instrumental in launching key initiatives that expanded access and development opportunities across the province, including large-scale festivals, provincial competition circuits, and grassroots programming that reached thousands of young athletes.

Comeau also played a pivotal role in coach development and high-performance programming, contributing to the creation of structured pathways that continue to support elite basketball in Québec today.

In addition to his work in development, he shared his passion for the game as an NBA commentator on Réseau des Sports (RDS), helping bring basketball to a wider audience across the province.

Known to many as “Mr. Basketball” in Québec, Comeau leaves behind a lasting legacy defined by his passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to growing the game.

Canada Basketball extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the Québec basketball community.
