Canada Basketball statement on École secondaire St-Laurent allegations

Safe Sport

/

Feb 4, 2022

Canada Basketball offers its support to the victims from École secondaire St-Laurent and commends them for the courage they’ve shown in bringing these allegations of sexual abuse forward.

Additionally, our organization has offered its continued support to our Provincial / Territorial Sport Organization (PTSO) partner, the Quebec Basketball Association, as it commits to ensuring a healthy and safe environment is created for all participants.

Athletes participating in basketball at all levels across the country should always feel safe and protected when playing the game they love.  As the national governing body of basketball in Canada, it is our on-going responsibility to ensure that our training and competition environments reflect this.

There is no room for anyone, including coaches, who do not adhere to the Safe Sport policies Canada Basketball and Sport Canada have implemented.  More importantly, there is no room for those who lack the human values which contribute to a positive sporting experience, for all.

Additional victims or those with more information are encouraged to access the Canadian Sport Helpline toll-free in both official languages from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (ET), 7 days per week at 1-888-83-SPORT, or by email at info@abuse-free-sport.ca.
