Canada started the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2023 with a blowout win against Brazil in a 69-37 victory on Tuesday evening in Yucatán, Mexico.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Canada got off to a hot start leading Brazil 9-2 at the first timeout, with the team’s lead growing 14-2 at the 4:59 mark. 

- However, Brazil steadily chipped away at Canada’s lead, making it within single digits with about one minute left in the opening quarter. Canada led 20-13 at the end of the first.

- Both teams struggled to hit shots in the early stages of the second quarter. Savannah Swords hit Canada’s first field goal of the second at 6:38, extending the lead 26-15.

- Canada shot 4/15 from the field during the second quarter but, due to their dominance in the first quarter, managed to come away with a 33-25 lead over Brazil heading into halftime.

- Midway through the third quarter, Canada came alive after making three straight baskets from second-chance opportunities and turnovers. The lead ballooned 49-31. 

- Canada held Brazil scoreless for nearly the final five minutes of the third quarter, not allowing a single point from the 4:51 mark of the quarter until the buzzer sounded.

- Up 25 points going into the fourth quarter, the game was already over, but threes by Cearah Parchment and Deniya Prawl sealed the deal. Canada went on a 13-6 run in the final quarter to grab their first win.

CANADA HIGHLIGHTS

- Parchment and Prawl each had eight steals to finish the game. Parchment had a near triple-double with nine points and nine rebounds, while Prawl also finished with nine points. 

- More than half of Canada’s points came from turnovers–42 compared to Brazil’s two. While Canada’s defence played an enormous role in limiting Brazil, it generated their offence substantially. 

- Canada held the lead throughout the entire game, though there was one point where Canada held only a seven-point lead. At one point, Canada’s largest lead was 33 points, double the number of points Brazil had.

- Canada moves 7-1 against Brazil all-time in the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship. The team’s only loss against Brazil came in 2011.

- Canada will face the Dominican Republic on Wednesday as they look to gain their second win. The Dominican Republic lost 72-62 against Argentina in their first game.
