Canada defeats Dominican Republic to move to 2-0 at FIBA U16 Americas

HEADLINE

Canada continued to show their dominance with a 90-40 win over the Dominican Republic in the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2023 on Wednesday afternoon in Yucatán, Mexico.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Much like their first game, Canada took an early 10-2 lead up until the 5:46 mark in the first quarter. They would continue to grow the lead 20-5 with 3:10 left in the first.

- However, the Dominican Republic went on a quick 7-0 run that cut the lead to eight points by forcing some stops. Canada responded with their own 8-0 run to end the quarter 30-12.

- Canada started the second quarter off strong with a three-pointer by Jahda Denis, shortly followed by another three from Avery Arije. Canada shot 53 per cent from beyond the arc in the first half.

- Canada’s defence continued to limit the Dominican Republic as Canada outscored them 23-11 in the second quarter to grow the lead to 30 points by halftime. Yet, head coach Fabienne Blizzard said she’d like the see the team’s defence continue improving moving forward.

- The massive lead didn’t stop Canada from playing competitively, as Denis hit a three a few seconds into the second half. Denis shot 3/5 from the three scoring a team-high 15 points.

- Canada went on a 14-0 run before the Dominican Republic made a two-point shot. It was the only points the Dominican Republic scored in the third.

- Canada had already won the game going into the fourth, leading by 51 points. Yet, the team continued to show their skills by making crafty shots. When the dust settled, Canada held on to a 50-point lead to end the game.

CANADA HIGHLIGHTS

- Canada shot 40 per cent from the three-point line after a rough start from the three in Tuesday’s game against Brazil. Their shooting against the Dominican Republic better reflects Canada’s three-point skills.

- With 7:59 left in the game, Denis made a difficult shot in the key with two defenders on her. Putting Canada up by 50 points, she still screamed “and one” as she got fouled, showing the competitiveness of the team.

- All players on the roster, besides Sarah Reid, who was inactive in the game, scored points and contributed to the team’s win. Cearah Parchment had 13 points, six assists and five steals. Deniya Prawl had nine points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals. Chance Berry had 10 points and four steals.
