Canada earns a 5th place finish at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup with a 72-61 win over the Czech Republic

DEBRECEN, HUNGARY (August 15, 2021) - Canada takes a 72-61 win over the Czech Republic and their final game at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup.

The win earns team Canada a 5th place finish and worldwide ranking.

“Today was a great game, we came flying out of the gates with all kinds of energy and played very well, built a big league and weathered their storm in the second half,” said Head Coach Fabian McKenzie. “We had a well rounded team effort and everyone contributed and everyone played hard.”

Canada led the the entire game with Yvonne Ejim receiving her third double-double of the tournament with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Rosalie Mercille also made an impressive performance scoring 10 points and 5 rebounds in the win.

“I felt that we really came together and we really worked hard as a team. Everyone was contributing on and off the floor with their energy. Everyone put everything they had into this game,” said team captain Yvonne Ejim. “I’m really proud of our team and where we finished in this tournament.”

“Came away with a 5th place finish which we are very proud of. Proud of the effort of the ladies today and we're happy to go home with 5th,” said McKenzie.

The win concludes Canada’s time at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup which concludes today in Debrecen, Hungary.
