Canada falls to USA in gold medal game, takes home silver
HEADLINE
- Canada claimed silver at the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2023 after a 79-59 loss to the United States in the gold medal game on Monday night in Yucatán, Mexico.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Canada fell to an early 4-0 deficit against Team USA after being held scoreless for the first two minutes of play. However, Savannah Swords made four quick points to tie the game with 6:25 left in the first quarter.
- Throughout the rest of the quarter, the teams traded baskets until the USA slowly began to pull away. A layup by Eirny Erinugha put Canada within six points, but the USA responded with a three.
- With 15 seconds left in the first, Chance Berry grabbed an offensive rebound and made the layup to bring Canada within seven points. USA led 19-12 at the end of the first.
- Canada was held to eight points during the second quarter as the USA scored 22 points. With 1:56 left in the second, Berry got fouled and made both free throws to bring the deficit to 15 points. However, the USA led 41-20 when the halftime buzzer sounded.
- Canada began the third with a 5-0 run, holding the USA scoreless for the first three minutes of play. Canada’s defence would continue to limit the USA, ultimately outscoring them 17-14 in the third. It was the first time an opponent outscored the USA in a quarter. Yet, Canada was still losing 55-37 at the end of the quarter.
- Canada gave it their all in the final 12 minutes of action, playing hard defence and trading baskets with the USA. While it wasn’t enough to claw back and win, Canada limited the USA to the fewest points the team scored throughout the tournament. Canada also scored the most points against the USA compared to any of their other opponents.
CANADA HIGHLIGHTS
- Cearah Parchment made the tournament’s All-Star Five following the conclusion of the game. She averaged 10 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 3.5 steals in the tournament.
- With around three minutes left in the third quarter, Canada made a string of highlight-worthy passes and baskets. At 3:12, defenders swarmed Sarah Reid as she drove to the basket, finding an opening for Erinugha to make the layup. About a minute later, Deniya Prawl got the offensive rebound off her miss and scored a layup. With about one minute left in the quarter, Parchment hit a fadeaway jump shot to put Canada within 14 points.
- With 3:46 left in the fourth, Swords made a three-pointer, shortly followed by a layup and a trip to the free-throw line. Swords had a team-high of 22 points on 6/14 shooting from the field.

- Following Saturday night's quarter-final win, Canada qualified for the FIBA Women’s U17 Basketball World Cup 2024, which is set to take place next summer in Mexico. Canada will look to improve on a fourth-place finish at the tournament in 2022.
