Canada finishes perfect first round with dominant win over Jamaica 116-78 in Hamilton

HAMILTON, Ont. (July 6, 2026) — Canada completed an undefeated first round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers with a commanding 116-78 victory over Jamaica on Monday night at TD Coliseum in Hamilton.

The win improves Canada to 6-0 in the Americas Qualifiers and caps off a perfect first-round campaign on home court after opening the window with a victory over Puerto Rico on Friday.

After briefly trailing 3-0 in the opening minutes, Canada took the lead for good when Dillon Brooks knocked down a three-pointer with 8:07 remaining in the first quarter. Canada controlled the game the rest of the way, leading for more than 38 minutes and steadily building their advantage before pulling away in the second half.

Hamilton native Shai Gilgeous-Alexander once again led the way in front of his hometown crowd, finishing with 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals in just over 20 minutes of action. The reigning NBA MVP energized the packed crowd with four dunks and scored eight points over the final two minutes of the opening quarter to help Canada seize complete control.

Brooks paced all Canadian scorers with 20 points, shooting 8-for-12 from the field and 4-for-5 from three-point range while adding three rebounds and three steals.

Andrew Nembhard continued his strong qualifying campaign with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists without committing a turnover, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker contributed 12 points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds.

Canada forced 19 Jamaican turnovers while recording 14 steals and converted those opportunities into transition offence. An 11-0 run midway through the third quarter stretched Canada's lead to 29 points and effectively put the game out of reach.

Andrew Thelwell led Jamaica with a game-high 25 points, adding three rebounds and three assists.

With the win, Canada closes the first round of qualifying undefeated and remains firmly positioned atop its group heading into the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers.

Canada will return to action during the next qualifying round next month as the road to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup continues.
