BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (June 23, 2023) — The Canadians just keep coming. Olivier-Maxence Prosper and Leonard Miller were each selected on Thursday night at the 2023 NBA Draft.

Prosper got the party started, becoming the 19th Canadian to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft since 2010. The Marquette alumnus heard his name called by NBA commissioner Adam Silver and was picked 24th overall by the Sacramento Kings, before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

“It’s truly a blessing,” Prosper said. “I’m really grateful.”

When asked what kind of player the Mavericks would be adding to their roster, Prosper didn’t hesitate.

“I would say they’re going to get a guy that is going to work his tail off every day to get better and help the team get better. I’m going to be the hardest worker on the floor, a guy that you can count on to defend multiple positions and a guy on offence that you can count on to drive, knock down open shots, finish above the rim. I’m going to be a guy that is going to make hustle plays on the floor. I see myself as a spark.”

Prosper, who was invited to the green room after soaring up the draft board late in the draft process following a strong showing at the NBA Draft Combine in May, shared the special moment with his family in Brooklyn. A part of the draft party was sister Cassandre, who is a member of the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team.

It’s been a remarkable rise for Prosper, who after registering just 2.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in his freshman season, went on to average 12.5 points per game this season. His junior year helped him climb from unheralded prospect and rotation player at Marquette to a near lottery selection in the NBA Draft. 

“The biggest thing is to believe in yourself,” Prosper said. “At the Combine, my workouts, I was just trying to be myself, in terms of being the hardest worker, loudest guy on the floor, making all the hustle plays, playing defence and controlling what I can control and letting everything else be.

“I focused on the things I could control and I outworked everybody out there,” he continued.

Prosper will be sharing the court with Mavericks All-Star Luka Doncic and he couldn’t be more thrilled about the pairing.

“Super excited to play alongside guys like Luka Doncic,” he said. Playing alongside and being able to complement a guy like him, to help this team get back to where they want to be and win a lot of games, that’s what I’m here for. I want to help them win. I’m super excited to get there and get to work, grow and keep getting better and help this team get better.”

Prosper will also be joining Dereck Lively II, selected by the Mavericks the 12th overall pick, in Dallas.

“We were like, ‘Which one should we take?’ And we got 'em both,” Mavericks GM Nico Harrison said. “They solve needs that we’ve been trying to solve. They’re long and they’re athletic and lead with defence. I’m generally a happy person, but we’re really excited. We feel like we killed the draft.”

Prosper suited up for Canada’s bronze medal winning U19 Men’s National Team at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2021, where he played alongside the likes of Zach Edey, Caleb Houstan and Ryan Nembhard.

His selection helped turn Thursday night into yet another opportunity to give love to the Montreal basketball scene. Prosper is set to join close friend Bennedict Mathurin, as well as Luguentz Dort and Chris Boucher as Montrealers to star in the Association in 2023-24.

Mathurin shared a post of Prosper on his Instagram story on Thursday night and captioned "LETS GOOOOO," as he shouted out his former NBA Academy teammate.

“Versatility. Hard work. Somebody that’s going to bring positivity and energy to the team,” said Guylaine Prosper, mother of Olivier-Maxence, when she was asked what the Mavericks are getting in an interview following the selection with ESPN.

Prosper’s selection wasn’t the only moment for Canada to celebrate on Thursday night.

After electing to pass up an opportunity at being selected in last year’s draft and join NBA G League Ignite, Miller seen his NBA dream come true on Thursday in Brooklyn. The 19-year-old Scarborough, Ont. product was picked in the second round, 33rd overall by the San Antonio Spurs, before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Playing alongside this year’s third-overall pick Scoot Henderson with G League Ignite, Miller averaged a double-double with 18.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in the NBA G League. His production increased as the year went along, and closed the year with a 55 per cent clip from the field. Miller also participated in the 2023 Jordan Rising Stars event as part of NBA All-Star 2023.

“The G League experience has prepared me so much because I really got that feel for the game,” Miller said. “With the game that we play in the G League, it’s the same thing as the NBA – the pace, the competitiveness and everything that goes to it. Guys are coming up and down from the league, guys trying to make their way into the league. I already have that feel. I feel like my game right now is ready, and I’m better than ever.”

Prior to joining the G League, Miller starred for Team Canada this past summer in Toronto where he was a part of the U23 Men’s National Team at GLOBL JAM alongside brother Emanuel. His brother was there to share the special moment with him on Thursday night.

While Miller was able to keep his emotion in check when his name was called, when he reached the stage to greet Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, he provided one of the most touching moments from the night. As the two shared an extended hug, Miller became overcome with emotion as the reality of his accomplishment started to sink in.

Prosper and Miller are each set to join a pair of members of the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team in their new homes. Prosper will unite with fellow forward Dwight Powell in Dallas, while Miller will lineup alongside Nickeil Alexander-Walker in Minnesota.

Together, the pair of draftees became the 30th and 31st Canadians to be selected in the NBA Draft since 2011, as talent only continues to be produced north of the border.
