Gilgeous-Alexander, Swords named Toyota Canada Players of the Week

TORONTO, Ont. (Dec. 18, 2023) - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Syla Swords have been named the Toyota Canada Players of the Week for Dec. 11-17.

For the third-time in this young NBA season, SGA is the Toyota Canada Player of the Week. Gilgeous-Alexander averaged more than 33 points, five rebounds and eight assists per game as the Oklahoma City Thunder went 2-1 over the week — with the highlight win coming against the defending champ Denver Nuggets. The Hamilton, Ont. product stepped up in the clutch for the Thunder, hitting a go-ahead pull-up jumper with 0.9 seconds remaining to seal an 118-117 victory. Gilgeous-Alexander was also named the 2023 Northern Star Award winner as the Canadian athlete of the year on Monday, as he joined Steve Nash as the only basketball players to ever receive the honour.

Swords had a career day at Hoopfest in Paradise on Saturday. Swords, who is in her second season with the Long Island Lutheran Lady Crusaders — a Nike Elite high school in Brookville, New York — recorded her first-career triple double in a decisive win over Lake Highland Prep. The Michigan Wolverines signee, who was named to the Naismith Girls High School Player of the Year watch list earlier this year, scored 17 points, while adding 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The Sudbury, Ont. product soared onto the scene summer, when she suited up for the Senior Women’s National Team and won bronze at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023 before then travelling to Spain to help lead Canada to the country’s second ever medal in FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup history.
