PREVIEW: Senior Women's National Team set to begin FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Hungary

Vienna, Austria (Feb. 2, 2024) - The ticket to Paris 2024 will be decided next week, and Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team is ready to qualify.

FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament

The team’s path to Paris has led up to this moment. From February 8 to 11, 16 countries, split into four groups, will compete for the final 10 qualification spots (USA & France have already qualified rounding the total to 12) to secure their spot in the Summer Olympics.

Canada is in tournament group 4 that will be hosted in Sopron, Hungary, alongside Spain (world rank no. 4), Japan (no. 9), and Hungary (no. 19). The top three teams following round-robin play will automatically qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer.

Tournament Schedule

All three games will be broadcasted LIVE on Sportsnet, and available on Courtside 1891 for fans outside of Canada. The schedule goes as follows:

Feb. 8th vs Hungary (1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT)

Feb. 9th vs Spain (9:30 am ET / 6:30 am PT)

Feb. 11th vs Japan (9:00 am ET / 6:00 am PT)

How the Team Got Here

After going undefeated at the FIBA Pre-Qualifying Tournament in November, the Senior Women’s National Team (SWNT) secured their spot in this year’s Qualifying Tournament. If they are successful in Hungary, the SWNT will punch their ticket to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris for their fourth straight appearance at the quadrennial event.

Training Camp

Back in January, some of the team members got back together to train in Toronto. With their minds on the upcoming tournament, Natalie Achonwa, Team Captain, re-enforced the message going around training camp.

“The conversation has been just making sure that we're buying in and that we're committing to the process…If we're like one foot in, one foot out, it's hard to gauge what is working and what is not…This commitment is something that's been ingrained in Canada Basketball,” she said.

Following their training camp in Toronto, the team is now in Vienna, Austria, preparing to kick off the tournament next week before they head to Sopron, Hungary.
