TORONTO (July 18, 2023) – Canada Basketball’s Women’s Junior Academy (JRA) returns for a second season this fall, and registration for the program is now open.

Athletes interested in signing up for the open identification tryout on September 10, 2023 (10:00 a.m. ET - 3:00 p.m. ET) at Humber College should complete the registration form to receive more information.

Additionally, those interested in joining the program as an Assistant Coach are encouraged to review the position and submit their resume and cover letter to Brandi Mills (bmills@basketball.ca) before the July 25, 2023 deadline. For additional information on becoming an assistant coach and the job description, click here.

The Women’s Junior Academy Program is a part of Canada Basketball’s Targeted Athlete Strategy (TAS) program, which began in 2009.

Junior Academy is the entry point into Canada Basketball's High Performance Athlete Development Pathway. Through excellent coaching and programming, we aim to provide 40 selected players born in 2010 and 2011 with an opportunity to train and develop in a high-performance environment.

Following the open identification tryout, over the course of six-weekend training sessions, athletes will work on developing their on-court skills while completing a series of off-court sessions focusing on social/emotional/mental development.

Athletes will work closely with targeted coaches who have had success at respective levels and have shown a dedication to national team programs.

Junior Academy works to fill a gap in the athlete’s developmental pathway between the Learn-to-Train and Train-to-Train stages of the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model to guide players toward becoming “Global Players.” This process stresses the importance of on-the-court athlete development and gaining the knowledge base necessary to be ambassadors for the game and the country.

The goal of the Canada Basketball Junior Academy Program is for athletes to comprehend and apply valuable skills and synthesize these techniques and evaluate how the lessons-learned fit into authentic game-like situations.
