RJ Barrett and Shaina Pellington Named Toyota Canada Players of the Week for January 10-16

RJ Barrett and Shaina Pellington have been selected as the Toyota Players of the Week for the week from January 10-16.

It was a huge week for Barrett as he led the Knicks to a 3-0 record while averaging 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while shooting 53% from the field, including 56% from 3-point line per game. The 6’6” guard from Mississauga, ON was a five-star recruit and named the Naismith Prep Player of the Year and the Gatorade National Player of the Year before signing to Duke University (NCAA). Barrett declared for the 2019 NBA Draft after his rookie year, where he was selected as the 3rd pick in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft. Representing Team Canada, Barrett was named MVP at the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup after leading his team to a gold medal and most recently competed with the Senior Men’s National Team at the FIBA OQT in Victoria last summer.

Pellington returned to the lineup and made an immediate impact against Oregon State, scoring 12 points on 4/6 FG, while also adding 2 rebounds and 2 assists. The 5’8” guard hit the game winner to put Arizona up on top 55-53 over Oregon with 0.1 seconds remaining. It is the second game winner that Shaina has hit this season. Pellington, from Pickering, ON, was ranked as the number 5 international prospect and top international guard before playing for the University of Oklahoma (NCAA) and was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2018. After playing two seasons with Oklahoma, Pellington transferred to the University of Arizona (NCAA) where she is currently in her senior year. Pellington has represented Team Canada for over 6 years, most notably leading the U16 team to a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Tournament in 2015, and most recently playing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this past summer.
