Senior Women’s National Team roster announced for FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023
TORONTO (June 27, 2023) – Canada Basketball announced Wednesday the 12 athletes named to the Senior Women’s National Team roster for the upcoming FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023.

Featuring the top ten teams in the zone competing in the most prestigious senior women’s basketball tournament in the Americas, the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023 will run July 1-9, 2023 in León, Mexico. All the action will be streaming live on Sportsnet NOW.
Canada was drawn into Group B and will face host nation Mexico (Sunday, July 2, 10:10 pm ET / 7:10 pm PT), Puerto Rico (Monday, July 3, 10:10 pm ET / 7:10 pm PT), Colombia (Tuesday, July 4, 7:40 pm ET / 4:40 PM PT), and Dominican Republic (Wednesday, July 5, 4:40 pm ET / 1:40 pm PT), before the knockout phase begins on Friday, July 7.
With the USA having already secured a spot at next year's 2024 Olympic Games, the best-performing country outside the USA will automatically advance to the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in February 2024.
"After an extensive training camp and an exhibition series against Japan in Victoria earlier this summer, we are ready for the challenges the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2023 will bring,” said Víctor Lapeña, Head Coach, Senior Women’s National Team. “This is a great opportunity for our team to test ourselves against the best teams in the Americas while competing for an AmeriCup title while taking another step towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”
Before departing for Mexico, the Senior Women’s National Team recently held a training camp in Toronto from June 15-23 at Scotiabank Arena.
Earlier this year, from May 22-29, the team held a training camp in Edmonton, home of the Senior Women’s National team since 2013. As a part of AmeriCup preparations, Canada also hosted an exhibition series against No. 9 ranked Japan in Victoria, B.C., as Victoria played host to a Senior Women’s National Team game for the first time in over 20 years.
Canada will be looking to capture their fourth AmeriCup title, first winning the tournament in 1995, followed by back-to-back victories in 2015 — on home soil in Edmonton — and 2017. Canada has finished top four in each of the last seven editions of the competition, dating back to 2009.
The team is coming off a fourth-place finish at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022, Canada’s best finish at the World Cup since a third-place finish in 1986.
Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team is ranked fifth in the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike, after the rankings were updated following the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.
