TORONTO – Canada continues its journey toward the FIBA Men’s World Cup 2027 in Qatar as the second window of the FIBA Americas Qualifiers tips off later this month.
Fresh off a historic bronze-medal finish at the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 — the country’s first-ever medal at the tournament — Canada’s senior men’s national team aims to build on its global momentum on the road to 2027. The 2023 tournament saw Germany claim gold, Serbia take silver, and Canada secure bronze with a dramatic 127-118 overtime win over the United States. Dillon Brooks set a FIBA World Cup record in the medal game by scoring 39 points, the most ever in a medal-winning match.
Canada opened qualifying play for the 2027 edition with a 2-0 record against the Bahamas this past December, earning a 111-75 victory before securing a 94-88 win on home court at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. Kyle Wiltjer led the team in scoring (18.5), rebounds (5.5) and efficiency (21) across the two contests. Wiltjer is the only player in the Americas to have played more than six games in the World Cup Qualifiers and to have an average of 20+ points per game.
16 national teams across the Americas began qualification in four groups of four during the first window. The group stage continues through the second and third windows, concluding in July 2026. The top three teams from each group advance to the second round (August and November 2026, and February 2027), with seven teams ultimately qualifying for the World Cup. The tournament is set to take place Aug. 27- Sept. 12 2027 in Doha, Qatar.
Canada sits atop Group B after the opening window, level on points with Jamaica following two wins each. Puerto Rico and the Bahamas round out the group. With two more wins – or possibly just one, depending on other results – Canada could clinch a spot in the second round in August.
Canada visits Puerto Rico in San Juan on Feb. 26 (7:10 p.m. ET) before travelling to Kingston to face Jamaica on March 1 (6 p.m. ET). Both games will stream in Canada on TSN+ and internationally on Courtside1891.
Canada Basketball will announce this window’s coaching staff and player roster on Sunday, Feb. 22.
