TORONTO (June 4, 2023) – Canada Basketball announced Sunday the U16 Men’s National Team roster for the upcoming FIBA U16 Men’s Americas Championship 2023.

The FIBA U16 Men’s Americas Championship 2023 will run June 5-11, 2023, in Yucatan, Mexico. The field will comprise the top eight teams from across the Americas zone. All the action will be streaming live on FIBA’s YouTube channel.

Canada is in Group B and is set to compete against Dominican Republic (June 5, 2:30 p.m. ET), Uruguay (June 6, 5:00 p.m. ET) and Brazil (June 7, 2:30 p.m. ET) in Group Phase action.  All eight teams participating in the event will advance to the quarter-finals, with the semifinal and final to proceed.

The top four teams in the event will successfully qualify for next summer’s FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2024.

Chris Cheng will make his head coaching debut for Canada at the tournament after serving as an assistant coach for Canada at the FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2022. Jason Dawkins, Willy Manigat and Peter Guarasci will be assistant coaches alongside Cheng.

Canada has never finished worse than third at the tournament and has won silver in three of the last four FIBA U16 Men’s Americas Championships dating back to 2015. Canada won bronze in 2021, thanks to a 92-76 win over Dominican Republic in the third-place game.

Prior to departing for Mexico, Canada held a selection camp with 20 athletes at The University of Toronto Mississauga from May 23-June 1.

Canada is currently ranked 7th overall in the FIBA boy’s age-group rankings, presented by Nike, following the conclusion of the FIBA 2022 Youth Events.
