MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Nate Darling knocked down six three-pointers and Canada rolled past Panama 99-49 on Saturday to remain undefeated at the FIBA Men’s AmeriCup 2025.
Darling finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kyle Wiltjer, Leonard Miller and Mfiondu Kabengele each added 13 points in the win, while Wiltjer also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Marcus Carr paced Canada with six assists, with Kyshawn George and Trae Bell-Haynes adding five apiece.
Canada set the tone early with a 33-16 opening quarter and blew the game open in the third, outscoring Panama 24-4, including a 21-0 run. Canada’s bench contributed 54 points on the night as the team piled up 29 assists on 36 made field goals.
“We felt Panama was a team that could really pick up the pressure and try to make us play erratic,” said head coach Nathaniel Mitchell. “So we wanted to make sure we played disciplined, passed the ball, moved the ball offensively. I was really happy with that — 29 assists on 36 field goals — and we took care of the ball as well.”
The 50-point margin marked Canada’s second-largest in AmeriCup history, trailing only a 55-point win over Mexico in 2009. Panama’s 49 points were the second-fewest ever scored by a team at the tournament.
Darling’s six threes tied the second-highest mark by a Canadian in AmeriCup play, behind only Brady Heslip’s seven in 2015, also against Panama (since FIBA AmeriCup data started being tracked in 2003).
Canada (2-0) sits atop Group B alongside Puerto Rico, who also remain unbeaten. Both teams have already secured a berth in the quarterfinals. The two sides will meet Monday at 11:10 p.m. ET / 8:10 p.m. PT to determine the top seed.
“We’ve obviously seen them in the past — physical team, change their coverages a lot, really talented, put pressure on the rim with their guards,” Mitchell said of Puerto Rico. “We’re going to have to rebound against them. Alvarado’s the head of the snake with their team, and they have guys who can shoot it. They’re well coached. It’ll be really exciting for us to prepare for.”
The quarterfinal round begins Thursday, Aug. 28.
