Mitchell Set to Return as Head Coach for Second Window of FIBA Men’s World Cup 2027 Qualifiers

TORONTO — Fresh off a 2-0 start in the first window of the FIBA Men’s World Cup 2027 Qualifiers, Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team returns to action as they look to build momentum in the second qualifying window.

Canada will face Puerto Rico in San Juan on Feb. 26 (7:10 p.m. ET) before taking on Jamaica in Kingston on March 1 (6:00 p.m. ET). Both games will stream in Canada on TSN+ and internationally on Courtside1891.

The team went 2‑0 in their first two qualifying games against Bahamas last December, taking a commanding 111‑75 victory in game one, followed by a 94‑88 win on home soil at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

Nathaniel Mitchell will return to the helm for the second qualifying window.

Mitchell guided Canada to a fourth-place finish at the FIBA Men’s AmeriCup 2025 and previously served as an assistant coach at the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023, where Canada captured a historic bronze medal over the United States, as well as the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. He also continues to serve as head coach for the Guangzhou Loong Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association.

Also returning to the bench for the second qualifying window are assistant coaches JD Jackson, Hanno Möttölä and Phil Jevtovic.

Jackson, a native of Burnaby, B.C., rejoins Canada’s coaching staff while continuing to coach in the French professional league. A former national team player at the 1990 and 1994 FIBA World Cups, he previously served as a senior team assistant coach in 2021, and is a member of the British Columbia Basketball Hall of Fame.

Möttölä, a veteran of Finland’s national program as both a player and coach, as well as a 2000 NBA draft pick, competed in multiple EuroBasket tournaments and the 2014 FIBA World Cup. He brings extensive European basketball experience and most recently served as an assistant coach with Finland from 2019 to 2025.

Jevtovic, who also serves as Assistant General Manager for Canada’s 3x3 Men’s National Team, was part of the senior men’s coaching staff at both the FIBA Men’s World Cup in 2023 and the Paris Olympic Games year later. He now focuses on an expanded performance role, specializing in video analysis, scouting, and analytics.

Canada’s training camp roster for this window will be announced Sun., Feb. 22. For more information on the competition format and schedule, visit FIBA.basketball.
