Jamal Murray continues to quiet all doubters. After scoring 35 points in Denver’s 112-109 series-clinching Game 5 victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Murray opened the second round with a 34-point performance in a 125-107 Nuggets win over the Phoenix Suns.

Murray was 13-for-24 from the floor in Game 1 against the Suns, making 6-of-10 three-point attempts and both of his free throw attempts while adding five rebounds and nine assists in 37 minutes. The Kitchener native is averaging 25.7 points, as well as seven assists per game in the playoffs thus far.

“Those moments are the ones you dream of as a kid,” Murray said after his 34-point performance. “You try to re-enact those in the backyard. You live for those moments, you want to make the most of those moments. I’ve been waiting for a while to be healthy, to be back and playing at this level, during this time of year.”

The Nuggets followed up Saturday's Game 1 victory with a solid 97-87 victory in Game 2 on Monday to take a 2-0 series lead and quiet anyone thinking that their Game 1 win was a fluke.
“We know what we’re capable of,” Murray said. “I don’t know, it sounds like you’re asking us if we’re surprised. We’re confident in what we can do, we’re confident in what we do. We’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing, keep proving everyone wrong and just taking it one game at a time,” Murray said.

- Under the bright lights of MSG, the New York Knicks earned their first win in the second round of the postseason in a decade on Tuesday. RJ Barrett scored 24 points in a 111-105 Knicks win over the Miami Heat to tie their second-round series at one game apiece. Barrett had a game-high 26 points in New York’s 108-101 Game 1 loss. The 22-year-old is averaging 19.5 points per game in his second postseason after averaging 19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game in his fourth NBA season.

- The league announced on Wednesday that Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid was named the 2022-23 NBA MVP. Embiid averaged a league-best 33.1 points to go with 10.2 rebounds per game in his first MVP season. His win makes him the first player from Cameroon to ever win the award. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received six fourth-place votes and 28 fifth-place votes, giving him 46 total points to place fifth in voting for the award. He made Canadian history as the first Canadian besides two-time MVP Steve Nash to receive MVP votes. Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.6 steals per game in his fifth NBA season.

Senior Men’s National Team Coaching Consultant David Blatt was inducted into Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv’s Hall of Fame on Thursday. Blatt is widely considered to be one of the greatest coaches in the history of European Basketball, having led Maccabi to five Israeli championships, six state cups and a EuroLeague championship.

- The FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 draw has taken place and Canada will be playing in Jakarta in Group H along with France, Lebanon and Latvia. The Senior Men’s National Team will compete in the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 this summer when the event takes place from Aug. 25 - Sept. 10. The Group Phase will take place in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia with the Final Phase to take place in Manila.

After finishing World Cup qualifiers with a FIBA Americas-best 11-1 record, Canada will be one of 32 teams competing in this year’s Men’s World Cup.
“I’m excited to get back together as a group in August and continue building on a strong performance during the Qualifiers,” said Nick Nurse, Head Coach of Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team. “We’ve built a challenging exhibition schedule against some of the top federations in the world, which will prepare our team for the tough competition we’ll face in Group H and throughout the World Cup.”

- Shay Colley set a new career-high in the Ligue Féminine de Basketball, scoring 18 points for Charleville-Mézières. Colley last starred for Canada in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia where Canada finished fourth. The 27-year-old is averaging 9.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game this season.
We caught up with Colley back in March when she joined the rest of the Senior Women’s National Team for a week of training camp and an exhibition game in France.
