HAMILTON, Ont. (July 3, 2026) — Canada Senior Men's National Team delivered a statement performance on home court Friday night, defeating Puerto Rico 110-84 at TD Coliseum to remain unbeaten in the FIBA Men's Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers.

The victory improves Canada to 5-0 atop Group B and secures first place in the group heading into Monday's qualifier against Jamaica.

Hamilton native Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 26 points, adding four assists, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks while shooting 9-for-14 from the field. Andrew Nembhard added 23 points, four rebounds and four assists, connecting on five three-pointers, while Dillon Brooks added in 15 points – 11 of which came in the first-half.

Canada seized control early, building a 15-point lead after the opening quarter before extending the advantage to 18 points at halftime. Canada never looked back, shooting 64.8 per cent from the field, and finished with 29 assists on 46 made field goals.

The 46 made baskets tied the FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Qualifiers record, matching the mark previously set by the United States.

"I really like the way we came out in this game," said Head Coach Gordie Herbert. "We've had a huge emphasis that FIBA is a 40-minute game, not a 48-minute game. That was our emphasis from day one, and I thought the players did an outstanding job. I thought our first 15 minutes of this basketball game was high level."

Playing in front of a hometown crowd for the first time since 2022, Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on the opportunity to represent Hamilton.

"It's amazing," said Gilgeous-Alexander. "It's special. I don't take those opportunities for granted to be able to play in front of the people that watched me grow up and are from the same city I'm from, grew up in the same neighbourhood I'm from, and went through the same experiences. It's a special connection. It was super fun out there for sure."

Canada dominated inside, outscoring Puerto Rico 60-34 in the paint while committing just 11 turnovers.

Ismael Romero led Puerto Rico with 17 points, while Alfonso Plummer and Ethan Thompson each added 14.

Canada will close out the third qualifying window on Monday, July 6, when it hosts Jamaica at TD Coliseum in Hamilton. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET, with the game broadcast live on TSN.
