OKLAHOMA CITY — The list of Canadians to win an NBA championship just got two names longer.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort helped lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 103-91 win over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
Gilgeous-Alexander, from Hamilton, had a game-high 29 points to go along with 12 assists and five rebounds. He was named Finals MVP after becoming just the fifth player in NBA history to record at least 25 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in a Finals Game 7.
Dort, from Montreal, added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals, delivering his trademark defensive intensity on the biggest stage.
With the victory, Gilgeous-Alexander and Dort became the 11th and 12th Canadians to win an NBA title.
Two Canadians were guaranteed to hoist the trophy this year, with Pacers guards Andrew Nembhard and Bennedict Mathurin also representing Canada in the Finals, marking the fourth straight year a Canadian has been part of an NBA championship-winning team.
Canada’s NBA title lineage includes Mike Smrek (1987-88), Bill Wennington (1996-98), Rick Fox (2000-02), Joel Anthony (2012-13), Cory Joseph (2014), Tristan Thompson (2016), Chris Boucher (2018, 2019), Andrew Wiggins (2022), Jamal Murray (2023) and Oshae Brissett (2024).
